The Fear of Public Speaking Starts Early

Did you know that 75% of people are afraid of public speaking? That’s over 200 million people who feel anxious or nervous about talking in front of others. What’s even more surprising is that this fear often begins in childhood.

While public speaking is one of the most common fears, it’s also one of the most valuable skills a person can develop. And here’s the good news: martial arts can play an unexpected yet powerful role in helping kids build the confidence they need to speak up and lead.

Building Confidence Through Personal Experience

I’ve always been part of the lucky 25% who aren’t afraid of public speaking. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t feel nervous at some point. My confidence in speaking developed when I joined the Army at 19.

Imagine being a junior-level soldier, equivalent to a newbie manager, and having to brief high-ranking officers like company commanders and first sergeants—people who felt like the Fortune 500 CEOs of the military world. Talk about intimidating!

Those experiences taught me how to stay composed and confident in front of a crowd, and it’s one of the reasons I love using martial arts as a tool to help kids develop the same life skill.

How Martial Arts “Sneaks” Public Speaking Into Every Class

Martial arts is known for building confidence, discipline, and respect. But one thing many people don’t realize is how it naturally incorporates public speaking into its lessons. In our program, we include small, intentional moments in every class to help students practice speaking in front of others without even realizing they’re doing it.

Here’s how it works:

At the beginning of every class, students recite the Student Creed. This is a short, three-sentence intention statement about how they’ll use their martial arts training. Often, I ask for volunteers to lead the Creed, but when I notice a student needs an extra push, I’ll “voluntell” them to take the lead.

For many kids, this is their first experience standing in front of a group and speaking aloud.

Some kids are so nervous that they stumble over their words or freeze entirely. And when that happens, something magical takes place: the other students quietly whisper the words to help them out. This kind of support and camaraderie builds confidence—not just in the student leading the Creed but in everyone involved.

Kipp’s Breakthrough Moment

Let me share the story of one of my newer students, Kipp. He’s a bundle of energy but also incredibly quiet. When I ask him questions during class, he usually answers with hand signals instead of speaking.

One day, we had a smaller class, which meant fewer eyes on the students. On days like this, I like to involve the kids in planning parts of the lesson and even give them the opportunity to “practice” leading.

That day, I asked Kipp to lead the Student Creed.

I’ll be honest—I wasn’t sure what would happen. Kipp had two potential paths: he could freeze and struggle to get through it, or he could rise to the challenge.

When I called him up, I glanced at his mom. She looked as nervous as I felt.

But then something amazing happened: Kipp walked confidently to the front of the room, stood tall, and led the class through the Creed. He nailed it.

The pride on his mom’s face was unforgettable. And you know what’s even better? Over the next few classes, Kipp began answering my questions—with his voice! For a kid like Kipp, that was a monumental breakthrough.

The Connection Between Martial Arts and Public Speaking

Martial arts isn’t just about kicks, punches, and physical discipline—it’s a system for developing life skills. Public speaking is one of the most valuable skills kids can gain, and martial arts creates a safe and supportive environment to practice it.

Here’s how martial arts helps:

  • Small Steps Build Big Confidence: Starting with reciting a simple creed or answering questions in class helps kids ease into speaking in front of others.
  • Supportive Peers: The camaraderie of martial arts creates a space where students feel encouraged by their classmates.
  • Leadership Opportunities: As students progress, they’re given more chances to lead portions of class, strengthening their ability to communicate effectively.
  • Repetition: The more often kids speak in front of others, the more natural it becomes.

Why Public Speaking Skills Matter for Kids

Public speaking isn’t just about standing in front of a crowd with a microphone. It’s about confidence, clear communication, and the ability to advocate for yourself and others.

By practicing public speaking in martial arts, kids gain:

  • Self-Assurance: Confidence to express their thoughts and opinions.
  • Leadership Skills: The ability to inspire and guide others.
  • Resilience: Learning to handle nerves and push through challenges.
  • Teamwork: A greater understanding of how to support and connect with others.

These are skills that extend far beyond the mat and prepare kids for success in school, relationships, and their future careers.
